I’ve often wondered why I’m such a pirate fan because, truth be told, I’m really not very pirate-like at all. I feel bad if I think I’ve hurt someone’s feelings, I don’t go a’plundering or a’raping and I hardly even ever get my feet wet.
Ok, ok, so my love probably has something to do with the flag to be honest, that and a liking for rum. But in a bid to feel better about the skull pencil toppers and skull and crossbones flag on my computer, I’ve been trying to hit on a way to incorporate pirateness into my ethos without being… well, particularly piratey.
So guess what? I applied pirate sterotypes to story writing. Now I can sail the seven seas of my imagination and spend untold years on the way they steal from reality. Occasionally I may double-cross a few fellow sailors, steal someone’s treasured memories or drift into dangerous water – but it will be ok, because I won’t just be a dick, I’ll be a literary pirate – and everyone loves pirates right?
What’s more, I’ll get to have a map to the gold (satisfaction of good work gold if not actually bestseller type gold!). I can’t lose. Right?

Have you seen my Pirates of the Carribean photoshop video yet? (bribe) it’s of Johnny Depp 🙂 I love pirates – ever since reading about Long John Silver. Though it took me some time to work out ‘the dead mans chest’ the 15 men were sat upon was an actual Treasure chest, and didn’t belong to a man 🙂
There are Pirates everywhere today (ripping people off) downloading illegal media. There were quite a few women pirates as well, and they seemed to have a whale of a time until they got found out 🙂
Pirates always had a parrot who always chanted ‘pieces of eight’.
I love any tale that has the sea in it (and I can’t even swim) Glad to see you are keeping the ethos of these men alive in your writing Lynsey – great idea 🙂

I like the fact you’re fascinated by sea-tales without being able to swim, I wouldn’t fancy your chances on a pirate ship though – especially not if you ended up walking the plank!

I love pirates! How can’t I, pirates are the only people who can get away with being jerks 🙂 I also love how we can apply almost any kind of stereotypes to story telling! I do it all the time to cover my weird habits and obsessions! I’m kind of obsessed with Venetian masks, but hey- it just means I disguise myself as the author in my stories so I can become any face I want, write from different perspectives of multiple characters 😉
But I LOVED how you applied your pirate stereotype, it really fits and shows how creative you are my friend 🙂

hehe, aw shucks, cheers. I think half the run of this blog is working out different ways to describe the story telling process. that;s kind of the same things as me writing the actual stories, right? Right? 🙂
Venetian masks are pretty awesome, as are excuses to indulge in habits and give them meaning! I don’t think we need to give up any time soon!
